Dear Principal

I would like to give clarity on the final arrangements on the following issues regarding the CAPS training. Breakfast and dinner will be included for all educators who indicated that they need accommodation. All educators who are attending the training will receive lunch at the venue where the training is taking place. The FET group who will do their training in Cradock will receive a lunch pack from the place where they are accommodated. If people are going to be accommodated in hostels they will have to provide their own bedding. If people are making use of their own transport they will not be able to claim for transport cost because we are willing to provide transport. Pick up points (see attached list) for transport will be at the closest town to the educators school at 07:00 on the morning when the training is starting for that specific group or subjects. Starting time for the workshop will be 10:00 on the first day. Each Graaff-Reinet District Educator will receive a certificate on completion of their training.

Principals, I want to request you to motivate your educators in a positive way to attend the training so that we can get it over and done with. Educators who will be accommodated in Graaff-Reinet, Somerset East & Willowmore must bring along their own bedding as well.

At this point and time there are two teams in the District Office planning the logistics of this exercise. Please realise that it is impossible to satisfy everybody’s likes and dislikes.

I hope this correspondence will give more clarity on some of your concerns.

ASSESSMENT ISSUES

Dear Principal

We are busy preparing for the last stretch of the year and therefore I want to request you and your SMT to see to the following issues:

· Emphasize to the learners that if they are going to be dishonest during the gr. 12 examination they will be suspended for three (3) years and will not be able to participate in any gr. 12 examination in the country.
· We must not only focus on the assessment of the gr. 12s but also those of other grades. Our gr.3, 6, 9 & 11s are also writing an external examination and therefore we must ensure that planning for these grades is also in place. Venues, for all grades (gr. 4 – 11), must be prepared on time and learners must know exactly what is expected of them when they are busy writing exams/tests. Consequences of dishonesty must be discussed with them and all schools must have an SEIC (School Examination Irregularities Committee) in place to handle any irregularities that may occur during the assessment period.
· Teachers or people from outside who are assisting with invigilation at the school must be informed about their roles and responsibilities and the importance of their job to ensure that we can complete a credible assessment period.
· The principal and the SMT of the school MUST remember that they are responsible for the running and completion of the assessment programme at their school. This responsibility includes to ensure that question papers and memorandums are of the highest quality, marking must be credible and fair, moderation of marked scripts must be done, marking lists must be verified, schedules and reports must be done correctly.
· Please see to it that a set of copies of each final SBA mark sheet, must include all tasks and practical tasks that had to be done throughout the year, per subject per grade is submitted to my office by 21 October 2011 at 13:00. Please do not forget to submit.
· Subject Advisors will visit schools to check if there is evidence for the SBA marks that are submitted to the office. As principal you must ensure that reports issued to parents correspond with what is in the schedule. We can not have a situation where a learner is down as NRP on the schedule but receives a report that promotes/progresses him/her to the next grade.

COMPUTER ROLL OUT

Through a wonderful gesture of goodwill Mr. R Lautenbach and Mr. Henk Kok from the Netherlands, Winterswijk Municipality, donated 121 computers to schools in the Graaff-Reinet area. Mrs. Daphleen Eksteen from Graaff-Reinet, who is a friend of the two gentlemen, was the person who initiated this project. Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to these people whose goodwill will bring change to the lifes of so many young children.

The pictures below was taken during the handing over occasion. The schools/centres that received computers are as follow from top to bottom: Narsingstreet Primary, WG Olivier Primary, Constantia Primary, Spandau ABET Centre, Aberdeen Secondary, Lingcom Primary, Kroonvale Primary and Nqweba Secondary.

THE NTA WINNERS OF OUR DISTRICT

Mrs. Ntobela (left) are representing our District at National Level in the ABET category and Mrs. May (right) are representing the District at National Level in the Category Secondary School Teaching. Both of these educators were winners at Provincial Level in the Eastern Cape.
